Enneagram: When INTENT doesn’t match IMPACT

Have you ever thought - “HOWWW did they see it that way? That’s not what I meant at all!”

Or - “Wow, ____ is a dick today. WTF is their problem?”

Cuz I have. Often. Recently… yesterday lmao

Enneagram reminds me though how different our perspectives are.. and how we can act in a way that doesn’t really show our true intention..what we really meant or wanted.

There are 9 Enneagram Types driven by 9 sets of motivations/fears.

9 different messages internalized in childhood that live in their brain rent free whether they realize it or not. (Squatters for real)

But, each of those 9 types has 3 subtypes. Those three subtypes can be in 6 different orders.

Meaning? There are SO MANY Enneagram layers that can factor into your perception of the impact you INTEND to make and the impact you ACTUALLY make.

Let’s back it up though and do a basic overview.

In general - Each Enneagram type has a main intention. When they try to achieve said intention - the impact isn’t always what they want it to be.

Enneagram 1s intend to improve themselves + the  world around them.

The impact? Sometimes others may feel judged, inadequate, or controlled.

Enneagram 2s intend to be loving, supportive people.

The impact? Sometimes others feel emotionally manipulated, guilted, or smothered.

Enneagram 3s intend to prove they can achieve success.

The impact? Sometimes others feel looked down on, walked over, or that their feelings don’t matter.

Enneagram 4s intend to express their unique identity.

The impact? Sometimes others feel unheard, judged, or alienated.

Enneagram 5s intend to observe and analyze the world around them.

The impact? Sometimes others feel detached from them, looked down on, or avoided.

Enneagram 6s intend to gain a sense of security + stability.

The impact? Sometimes others can feel residual stress, negativity, and as if they’re not trustworthy enough for you.

Enneagram 7s intend to find and experience new, exciting possibilities.

The impact? Sometimes others can feel unimportant, disconnected, and as though they can’t rely on you.

Enneagram 8s intend to maintain control over themselves and to protect their people.

The impact? Sometimes others can feel steamrolled, unheard, and controlled.

Enneagram 9s intend to maintain their sense of comfort, calm, and peace.

The impact? Sometimes others can feel disconnected, untrusted, and like they don’t really know you.

Please remember - none of this information is meant to be used as an excuse, a reason to not like someone, or a reason to start a fight.

It’s information to help you better understand yourself, and your impact.

Understanding yourself and your unintentional impact will only help you give others a lot more understanding when their impact isn’t quite what they intended either.
